Blanket License

Also known as:Subscription LicenseCatalog License

Definition

A Blanket License is a music licensing agreement that grants permission to use an entire catalog of music for a flat fee or subscription, rather than requiring individual licenses for each song. Streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music operate under blanket licenses negotiated with major labels and PROs. For creators, subscription-based music licensing services like Epidemic Sound and Artlist function as blanket licenses — a single subscription fee covers unlimited use of the entire music library for content creation. Blanket licenses are significantly more cost-effective than negotiating individual sync licenses for each piece of music used in content.
