Definition
A Content Assignment is a legal agreement in which a creator permanently transfers ownership of their original content — including all associated intellectual property rights — to another party, such as a brand, agency, or employer. Unlike a content license (which retains creator ownership while granting usage rights), an assignment means the creator no longer owns the work and cannot use it without permission from the new owner. Content assignments are common in work-for-hire arrangements and should always be negotiated carefully, as they permanently extinguish the creator's rights to the assigned material. Creators should seek significantly higher compensation for assignments versus licenses.
