Definition
Copyright is a form of intellectual property protection that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, and create derivative works from it. Copyright protection is automatic upon creation of an original work in a fixed medium — no registration is required, though registration strengthens legal standing. For content creators, copyright governs ownership of videos, music, written content, and images, and determines who controls how that content is used, licensed, or monetized. Copyright does not protect ideas, facts, or styles — only the specific expression of those ideas.
