Debanking

Also known as:Financial DeplatformingAccount Closure

Definition

The practice of a financial institution — bank, payment processor, or financial services company — closing, freezing, or refusing service to a creator or business based on the nature of their content, political views, or industry classification. Debanking has affected creators in adult content, firearms, cannabis, cryptocurrency, and politically controversial spaces. For creators, debanking is a form of financial deplatforming that can be as damaging as social media deplatforming, cutting off access to revenue collection, payroll, and business operations.
