Definition
A false statement of fact presented as true that damages the reputation of an individual or organization. In the creator economy context, defamation claims are one of the primary legal risks for creators producing commentary, criticism, investigative content, or opinion pieces about public figures, brands, or other creators. Defamation takes two forms: libel (written or published defamation, including video content) and slander (spoken defamation). Truth is an absolute defense against defamation claims in most jurisdictions. Creators should understand the distinction between protected opinion and actionable false statements of fact.
