Definition
Depth of field (DoF) is the range of distance within a scene that appears acceptably sharp in a photograph or video frame. A shallow depth of field (achieved with wide apertures like f/1.8) isolates the subject from a blurred background (bokeh), creating a cinematic, professional look. A deep depth of field (achieved with narrow apertures like f/11) keeps the entire scene in focus, preferred for landscapes and tutorial content where context matters. Controlling depth of field is one of the most impactful creative decisions a creator can make when shooting.
