Definition
Legacy media is a term used to describe established, traditional media companies and institutions — including major television networks, newspapers, and radio conglomerates — that predate the internet era. The term often carries a connotation of outdated business models, slow adaptation to digital disruption, and declining relevance among younger audiences. Legacy media organizations have struggled to compete with nimble digital-native creators and platforms. The term is frequently used in contrast to creator-led, independent media to highlight the structural differences in production, distribution, and audience relationships.
