Lens Flare

Also known as:FlareOptical Flare

Definition

Lens flare is an optical phenomenon that occurs when light from a bright source (such as the sun or a studio light) enters the camera lens and scatters across the sensor, creating streaks, circles, or hazes of light in the image. While traditionally considered a technical flaw, lens flare has become a deliberate aesthetic choice in filmmaking and creator content — particularly associated with the cinematic style of directors like J.J. Abrams.
