Definition
Mainstream media (MSM) refers to the dominant, widely consumed media outlets that shape public discourse — including major television networks (CNN, Fox News, BBC), national newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post), and large digital news platforms. The term is often used critically to describe media perceived as reflecting establishment or institutional perspectives. In the creator economy, many independent creators position themselves as alternatives to mainstream media, offering niche perspectives, unfiltered commentary, or community-driven journalism that legacy outlets do not provide.
