Myspace

Also known as:MySpace

Definition

Myspace was one of the first major social networking platforms, founded in 2003 and dominating social media from 2005 to 2008 before being overtaken by Facebook. Myspace allowed users to customize their profiles with HTML and CSS, embed music players, and build friend networks. It was particularly influential in music discovery and indie artist promotion. Myspace's decline is a canonical cautionary tale about platform dependency — artists who built their audiences exclusively on Myspace lost them when the platform collapsed. It is now primarily a music-focused site.
