Definition
Negative space (also called white space) is the empty or unoccupied area surrounding and between the subjects of an image, design, or layout. Far from being wasted space, negative space is an active design element that guides the viewer's eye, creates visual breathing room, and emphasizes the subject. In thumbnail design, generous negative space around a subject makes it stand out more clearly against the background. In web design, negative space improves readability and creates a sense of quality and intentionality. Mastery of negative space is a hallmark of sophisticated visual design.
