Retention Hacking

Also known as:Watch Time HackingEngagement ManipulationMetric Gaming

Definition

The practice of using psychological, structural, and algorithmic techniques to artificially or strategically maximize audience retention metrics — including watch time, session time, and completion rate — beyond what the organic quality of the content would naturally produce. Retention hacking tactics include open loops (withholding key information until late in a video), false urgency, misleading thumbnails or titles, and rapid-fire editing that prevents viewers from disengaging. While some retention techniques are legitimate content optimization, the "hacking" framing implies a more manipulative approach that prioritizes metric performance over genuine audience value.
