Definition
Rolling shutter is a video artifact caused by CMOS sensors that scan the image from top to bottom rather than capturing the entire frame simultaneously. This creates visible distortion — skewing, wobbling, or 'jello' effects — when the camera or subject moves quickly. Rolling shutter is a common challenge for creators shooting action, sports, or handheld content, and can be minimized with proper technique and stabilization.
