Definition
The length of time a camera's shutter remains open to expose the sensor to light, measured in fractions of a second (e.g., 1/50, 1/1000). In video production, the 180-degree shutter rule recommends setting shutter speed to double the frame rate (e.g., 1/50 for 25fps) to achieve natural motion blur. Faster shutter speeds freeze motion but create a choppy, staccato look; slower speeds create motion blur.
