Definition
A Synchronization License (sync license) grants permission to use a copyrighted musical composition in synchronization with visual media — such as a YouTube video, film, TV show, advertisement, or podcast. Sync licenses must be obtained from the music publisher or composer who owns the publishing rights to the song. A separate master license must also be obtained from the record label or artist who owns the sound recording. For creators, sync licensing is one of the most important legal concepts to understand because using music without proper sync licensing can result in copyright claims, video demonetization, or takedowns. Platforms like Epidemic Sound and Artlist provide pre-cleared sync licenses for creators.
