Throttling

Also known as:Reach ThrottlingDistribution ThrottlingAlgorithmic Suppression

Definition

The deliberate reduction of a creator's content distribution, reach, or algorithmic promotion by a platform — typically in response to policy violations, low engagement signals, or commercial decisions. Throttling is distinct from shadow banning in that it reduces reach rather than hiding content entirely. Creators may experience throttling as a sudden unexplained drop in impressions, views, or follower growth.
