Work for Hire

Also known as:Work Made for HireWFH (Legal)

Definition

Work for hire (or work made for hire) is a legal doctrine in copyright law under which the creator of a work — such as a video, design, or written piece — does not retain copyright ownership; instead, the commissioning party owns the copyright from the moment of creation. Creators should understand work-for-hire clauses in contracts, as signing them transfers all intellectual property rights to the client.
