X-Height

Also known as:X Height

Definition

X-height is the height of a typeface's lowercase letters, measured from the baseline to the top of a lowercase 'x' (excluding ascenders and descenders). Typefaces with a large x-height relative to their cap height tend to be more readable at small sizes — an important consideration for creators designing thumbnails, captions, and mobile-first content where text must remain legible at reduced sizes.
